God of War Ragnarok is the second biggest boxed game to launch in the UK this year, behind FIFA 23.
That means the PlayStation game sold more boxed copies in its first week than Elden Ring, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and the previous No. 2 Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
This is a pure physical box sale, and since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a major download game, God of War probably isn’t the second overall (we’ll get the download later this week data). But even so, it’s a huge opening week for Sony Games. 82% of boxed sales in the first week happened on PS5 and 18% on PS4.
As charting firm GfK revealed last week, Ragnarok sold more on its first day than any game in the series did in its first week. According to the data firm, the game’s sales in its first week were 51 percent higher than its previous top seller: 2018’s God of War. In just one week, the game has become the third best-selling God of War game of all time (it’s already number two in terms of revenue).
12% of PS5 God of War Ragnarok sales came from official PS5 bundles. GfK boss Dorian Bloch said the bundle accounted for 60% of all PS5 consoles sold this week, the biggest week for PS5 sales this year.
This means that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s two-week streak at the top of the list is over. Activision Blizzard’s sales dropped to No. 2 after a 39% drop week-over-week.
The next biggest new game of the month is No. 4 Sonic Frontiers. The Sega game sold 5 percent more in its first week than 2017’s Sonic Force, though the digital version of the game could expand that number. 40% of boxed sales were on PS5, 34% on Nintendo Switch, 14% on Xbox, and 12% on PS4.
Next, Football Manager 2023 ranks 11th, with boxed sales down 18% from last year (as the PC version, most of the game’s sales will be digital).
The physical release of Stray’s PS4 version saw the game return to the charts at No. 23, while Tactics Ogre: Reborn came in at No. 24 and Cobrai Kai 2: Dojo’s Rising debuted at No. 28.
Elsewhere, a surge in PS5 sales meant Sony’s other big game of the year — Horizon: Forbidden West — jumped to No. 7 after a 141% weekly sales increase. We also saw an increase in Switch game sales, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (No. 5) up 34%, Nintendo Switch Sports (No. 6) up 19%, and Splatoon 3 (No. 8). ) up 22%, Animal Crossing: New Horizons (No. 9) up 50%, and Minecraft on Switch up 42%.
