An adorable video of a pack of sausage dogs relaxing in the sun has gone viral on TikTok, with more than 600,000 views.
In a video posted by the Little Dachshund Club, the camera pans to five sausage dogs sunbathing, with the caption: “Dachshunds are notorious sun worshipers. Where there is sun, there are sausages.”
One user commented: “My dachshund loves the sun, he’s dragging his little mat in the garden to avoid the shade, a few more months.”
Why do dogs love the sun?
Dogs love to sit in the sun for the same reasons humans do. It’s warm, cozy and relaxing, so it’s the perfect place for a short nap. It is a natural and essential source of vitamin D for humans, but not for dogs, which, like cats, lack the ability to synthesize vitamin D precursors in their skin.
Do dogs need sun protection?
Hairless people need sunscreen if we’re going to be out in the sun for long periods of time, but what about dogs? The American Kennel Club (AKC) agrees. “Just like people, dogs are prone to sunburn and other sun exposure-related complications and illnesses. Taking certain safety measures can reduce your dog’s risk of developing serious sun-related medical problems. This includes choosing the best sun-related medical problems for you. dog sunscreen friends,” the site says
It’s important to use the correct type of sunscreen for your dog, as some can cause problems. “It is very important that you only use formulations that are specifically formulated for dog sunscreens,” the AKC says. “They should not contain zinc oxide or para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), as these ingredients are toxic to dogs if ingested, and Dogs will often lick their skin and accidentally ingest sunscreen. It’s also a good idea to look for a waterproof, unscented dog sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30.”
Can Dogs Get Heatstroke?
Heat stroke is one of the most serious heat-related illnesses. This occurs when the body can no longer regulate temperature and is unable to cool down.
The Dachshund Station website says that while dachshunds are hardy against the sun, it’s important to be mindful of how long they spend outside to avoid heat stroke or sunburn.
TikTok users seem to envy the dogs because…who doesn’t love a sunbath?
