Time in Nashville for the Music City Bowl. Both teams enter this game seven and five, looking to finish the year on a high. For players like Jake Campbell, Sam LaPorta and Riley Moss, they want to finish their careers with Iowa, winning. Joe Labose made his first start at quarterback for the Hawkeyes. At this point, the final search for the reporter paint connection. It would be a turn on down the stretch in the first quarter with very little offense that didn’t come as a surprise. IOWA’s defense was excellent all afternoon. Kentucky was playing an inexperienced quarterback in DESTIN WADE. He tries to be quickly defeated by Sebastian Castro. He had an extraordinary game. The first quarter will end the second quarter scoreless. I finally got around to moving things around and with the workers at the helm, the tight ends provide a huge security blanket that he needs. He throws a screen to Samuel Porter, a Porter passes. look It goes for VONLEH. Ballbring, six tackles on that 27-yard catch-and-run, drove Iowa deep into the red zone. Game Lab finds the very next Luke Lachette. And finally, we have a touchdown. IOWA led by seven in the second quarter. This lead will build quickly for the Hawkeyes. A very first offensive game for the WILDCATS is scheduled to be Wade’s first career start for Xavier Wambach. oh yes. First career pick-six. He carries it to the big box. IOWA takes a 14. They beat Kentucky, marking the first time a team has been shutout in a bowl game in its history. The Hawkeyes last won a bowl game in 1997. Hayden Fry’s Hawkeyes were in the Alamo Bowl and they won the game by 27. There is no substitute for hockey guesses. Another trophy goes back to Iowa City. And a special moment for that. Get them together, guys. And especially our seniors. There is no way to send them. It’s a great group and I can’t thank them enough for all they’ve done. And every one of these guys is really embodied. You know what it means to be a hockey player when you’re talking about guys who are top players or a kid like Tommy Hartley. But this group, you know, great technique on special teams. So just a really special group and you know, ball games, a little bitter sweet because of that. You have to say goodbye to these guys. I want to know your biggest take away from this game. What did you say to the people at home? Well, Jeff, really, even if you’re not on the ground, I bet you’re in a plane in the sky, actually noticing that’s cool. This defense was today. They were dialed in. They played honestly, the best I’ve seen in a long time. Here are some statistics for you. 64 tackles, four sacks in two interceptions. They stopped the offense for just the third time this season. But IOWA D Jeff, they play a simple game and it really washes and repeats. They defend well. They take him down into the deep. And then they put a great ball on the short field for the offense to hopefully generate some production. The reason why they are so successful. Fundamental said in the pre-game press conference that it all goes back to guys knowing the fundamentals. So in defense it is a pretty textbook. But as word got out in the inning, freshman secondary Xavier Wimp wanted to see his first career start, so he decided to go for a 52-yard pick-six. Sebastian Castro, he was a man who fell and he was wounded in the leg. Finally hit eight and the first sack of his career. But Cooper Geno was in the secondary and was named MVP. You must give credit where it is due. Jeff Oh has six solos and six picks in the third of the season. But this high defense is not just luck. We do a good job of making turnovers, if you will, giving them bad opportunities, and that’s the coach. You see the things these guys do all the time in practice, in games. You know, they’ve been playing it for a while now. And they made the most of it today. Now Cooper is hardly a veteran at first compared to what I saw today when he was just on it all the time. And yes, Shannon, you talked about that washout and repeated the talk about the depth of the Penning teams. Torey Taylor, the man behind the punt, apparently got some big news in the team’s postgame press conference. Terry Taylor, All-American, announced that he will return to Iowa City in 2023. So, Scott, this is huge for Iowa. A big piece of news for Kirk Ferentz and his staff as they begin assembling a team for 2023. Live from Nashville, Tennessee, FO

Music has never been so sweet for the Hawkeyes. Iowa scored two touchdowns in the second quarter and cruised to a 21-0 victory over Kentucky in Saturday’s Music City Bowl at Nissan Stadium. The Hawkeyes started QB Joe Labas, who never took a college snap. After a scoreless first quarter, Labas found its groove. He completed a 15-yard TD pass to Luke Lachey to give Iowa a 7-0 lead. Lebas filled in for the injured Spencer Petras, with his backup, Alex Padilla, transferred out of the program. Kentucky star QB Will Lewis also missed the game to prepare for the NFL draft. His replacement, Destin Wade, struggled mightily against Iowa’s defense. Soon after Iowa went up 7-0, Wade’s pass was picked off by Iowa freshman Xavier Nwankpa, who returned it 52 yards for a TD that electrified the stadium. Navankappa, a Southeast Polk graduate, had his first career start. Later in the quarter, Iowa’s secondary did it again. Cooper Dejean stepped in front of Wade’s pass and raced into the end zone for a 14-yard TD. It was DeJean’s third game-high six of the season, something no Hawkeye has ever accomplished.
