Omaha police officers shoot and kill gunman at Target in west Omaha
Okay. So I want to give you some information on how witnesses can contact the police department with any information they may have. We have set up a *** call center within our department down at our headquarters through our telephone reporting team. They can call 4024444877 and they will connect with someone. They can provide any information, any vital information that we need to continue this investigation. Um, as Chiefs matter said, we will keep the media updated on this situation. Um, this will come from the Omaha Police Department Public Information Office, specifically me or one of my staff. Again, we’ll continue to track it. OK? Okay. I’ll keep you posted on that. I’m not, I’m not quite sure right now, but I’ll make sure you’re all aware of that. Make sure we give everyone enough time to get the information, whether it’s a *** briefing or if it’s a ***, if it’s a *** announcement, we’ll make sure we put that out there proactively so that you’re all on available and ready to receive this information. Okay. So at 1159 today we received multiple 911 calls to the target at 178th and West Center for an active shooter. The investigation to date indicates that a *** white male in his thirties entered the target firing several rounds from an ar 15 rifle. Arriving officers confronted the individual and ultimately killed that individual, the suspect. He died at the scene. So it’s very early. We have our investigative team here on the ground. They are leading the investigation along with possibly our federal partners. And any other local agencies that are willing to help will accept their help and make sure we have a *** very, very thorough investigation. And again, any witnesses that we have don’t need to go back to the scene and can contact the police department at (402) 444 4877 and provide this information to someone over the phone there as far as we know now we have not found any other victims . Other than the suspect himself, we know he got in based on the evidence we saw inside that he did get in firing the rifle. But at this point we haven’t found any other victims inside. We have no reports at local hospitals that anyone has come forward injured from this incident. So at this point we think only the suspect is the only victim of this. Um, that incident. Lieutenant, you said the dinosaur calls start coming in at 11 59. Do you know what time the law enforcement standoff is? I don’t have that right now, obviously we’ll provide updates and provide that information as soon as we get it. I know they arrived in minutes. I don’t know how, how long exactly it sounds like the first few, they did exactly what our training shows or what we’ve trained to do is when we have an active shooter incident like this. We’ve learned *** a lot from other um, other jurisdictions, other areas, other cities that have unfortunately experienced this. We go right in, we’re trained to do it, whether it’s one officer or 10, we go in and neutralize the threat. Did you know the suspect was wearing any tactical gear? I know he had plenty of ammo and was armed with an AR 15 as far as what he was wearing. I’m not aware of that right now that I don’t know. I know he went into one of the entrances, one of the front entrances. I believe any idea as to how many shots were fired. Did you find the cartridges? I am not many times what I have right now. We can give you all that information later, we’ll have a lot of detailed information as the investigation progresses, what’s going on with our country, what’s going on with us here in Omaha. Well, unfortunately, we are, Omaha is not immune to this type of violence. That’s why law enforcement, whether local, federal, or other jurisdictions. We were all trained for this type of incident and our officers along with other law enforcement showed up and did what we were trained to do. And unfortunately these, these incidents happen and happen all too often. So, um, we’re just trying to make sure that our, our training is, um, as good as it can be to make sure that we’re ensuring public safety and also the safety of our employees. lieutenant. You said you learned from other incidents. And that training includes logging in right away. Why so? Well, in this type of incident, time is of the essence. We want to make sure we get in and, um, confront the suspect as soon as possible because the longer they’re in there. Unfortunately, what we’ve seen is that we typically see higher, higher casualties. That’s what we’re trying to eliminate by going right in and confronting the suspect and um, whether they surrender peacefully or we have to kill them, it’s a shame. Yes, it is. Omar, please. They were here. The different federal agencies are probably hundreds at this point, um, I know there’s multiple federal agencies, multiple uh, surrounding jurisdictions, the Nebraska State Patrol, and um, the Omaha Police Department, I’m sure there are smaller agencies here as well. Whether the suspect was found at the entrance of the store in the middle. It was found outside the entrance or excuse me outside the store at the time, but they say there is something to indicate whether or not there is an ongoing threat to the public. Right now we believe it’s certain that there was only one shooter and he’s dead, so here he is. Um, and again, these are all questions that will come up right now. Be sure to bring the updated information to you as soon as we get it, we’ll keep you updated. We’ll make sure you get all that information as soon as possible, okay? Ok thanks everyone.
